POL: Part for the Whole

The poem that I have chosen for the Poetry Out Loud competition is "Part For the Whole" by Robert Francis. I found this poem by randomly selecting three poems out of the poems that started with the same letter. I didn't pick this poem because of length or difficulty, I chose the content in which it stands for. Robert Francis usually makes shorter poems but includes meaning to him and the world he lives in. The basic picture you get from this poem is the sun. Each stanza shows how the sun is view from all places. The poem is trying to tell the reader a section of what you need, is all you need. Sometimes beauty can blind what you really need; the natural effect is all you need, and not covered by removable beauty. This meaning could also go along with the theme of the movie/book, The Princess and the Frog. The main theme for that movie/book is, only want what you need. Poems such as this one, relates to me by demonstrating how everyone takes too much than really need. From kids to elderly adults, they still have their times when one is too selfish to another. It happens daily to everyone.

My poem could sound happy, could sound sad, or could sound crazy. Everyone will have different tones for their poems, but if the whole class did the same poem, you could see people may interpret the tone or meaning differently as others. I'm not going to recite my poem as a whimsical tone or expressions. I'm also not going to be somber, I decide I will use an explanatory voice with dramatic emphasis. My face will show one emotion only, a leap of faith. The poem is trying to tell what is happening with burst of light, and I don't want to say the poem having a happy voice. The poem includes the word, "catch" twice. I will look up to the ceiling and pretend to catch something firmly in my hand. For this line in the poem, "Echoes the western sky, and even less" I will project my voice on the word echoes and bring my voice to a whisper when I say the western sky. "Part for the Whole" poem may be using the sun to imagine the meaning but sometimes it is recited without a bright voice.

ASAP URGENT PARAGRAPH EC!

The last time we did the five point paragraph, I had tons to work on. When my paragraph was critiqued, I was graded down because my language was not precise, my thesis was written well, missed a transition, and proofreading my paper. I am truly confident that my thesis proves something what I am writing about. Our class had revised and edited many times with our thesis's, so I think overall our class have great topic sentence that proves something. My writing style was graded down because I was too vague explaining points in my paragraph. I've worked with my point sentences and tried to be as descriptive as possible. I tried different transitions and worked them in, the transitions I have picked are usually ones that aren't chosen very often. My paper has grammar mistakes and I had switching tenses, as in, I started out with present tense then the next sentence was past tense. I had trouble with my last paper because I couldn't decide between certain words to put in my paper. My paper has been proof read by other people including myself, I think I have improved these specific skills in my current five point paragraph paper.

Poetry Out Loud

Part 1:
1. A poem that starts with the letter G: Grief by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
2. A poem that begins with the letter L: Layabout by John Brehm
3. A poem I suggest: Medusa by Louise Bogan. Poem that partner suggested: Trees by Joyce Kilmer
4. Pride by Yusef Kommunyakaa, Part for the Whole by Robert Francis

Part 2:
I liked the poem, Medusa by Louise Bogan, because it was unique and clever. I also liked this poem for its symbolism further than a mythical creature. The next poem i liked was Layabout by John Brehm. It was very in depth, and it is interesting to follow along. I didn't enjoy the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer among my poems I chose , I thought the poem was simple and wasn't as interesting as much. As well I liked, Pride by Yusef Kommunyakaa. I would pick this poem because it has self meaning, and I think what the poem is trying to tell is true. I want to do, Part for the Whole by Robert Francis, as my Poetry Out Loud poem.

Part 3:
I think the two criteria that would be the easiest for me in the competition are physical presence and dramatic appropriateness. I can look confident presenting my poem, and I do not over exaggerate the dramatic emphasis in the poem. The criteria that I will have trouble on would be voice/articulation and evidence of understanding. I'm worried that I will not pronounce words correctly. The way I say a phrase of words can mistaken the poem's literary devices.

Part 4:
I watched Allison Strong present, Sonnet CXXX: My Mistress' Eyes Are Nothing Like The Sun by William Shakespeare. Allison chose a poem that was harder than others, and recited it very well. She did enough dramatic presence that isn't over the top, it expressed tone, theme, and diction better.
William Farley had a successful recitation too. He recited, Danse Russe by William Carlos Williams. His performance was done very well, I could tell he understood the poem and expressed tone and theme greatly.

Part 5:
Poetry Out Loud seems loads of fun to do even with such high criteria. It's fun because most students find poems that have reason to their personally relation to themselves. I really want to recite Part For the Whole by Robert Francis because its its elegantly written with such imagery. I like the poems that takes you on an image until the reading is over. It will be hard to get a good score, but I'll still enjoy it all.
